Species-specific description: Chronic active hepatitis is one of the common causes of hepatic encephalopathy. In reviewing the published literature on dogs, Rothuizen et al. (1993) concluded that chronic active hepatitis is a "sex-linked disorder of females", most likely due to an immune defect.
