Species-specific description: This disorder is characterised by low levels of both 25-hydroxy-vitamin-D [25(HO)D] and 1,25-hydroxy-vitamin-D [1,25(HO)D], which thus distinguishes it from type I (normal 25(HO)D, low 1,25(HO)D) and type II (normal 25(HO)D, high 1,25(HO)D).

History: Phillips et al. (2011) described this condition in one kitten in a litter of four fed an identical ration. On the basis of this and other evidence, they suggested that this disorder could be due to an inborn error of metabolism, i.e. an enzyme deficiency due to a mutation in the corresponding gene.
