OMIA:001724-9615 : Melanoma, malignant in Canis lupus familiaris (dog)

In other species: swordtail and platyfish , Japanese medaka , lion , water buffalo

Categories: Neoplasm

Links to MONDO diseases: No links.

Mendelian trait/disorder: unknown

Considered a defect: yes

Inheritance: Genetic pre-disposition to cancer have been described, suggesting that it is a multifactorial disease. Somatic mutations in the KIT gene have been identified in canine malignant melanomas and such mutations may indicate responsiveness to specific therapeutic interventions. Tani et al. (2021) present such an example of pharmacogenetics, reporting "a canine case of malignant melanoma that responded to toceranib therapy. KIT encoded by KIT harboring a mutation c.1725_1733del is a potential therapeutic target for toceranib in canine malignant melanoma."

Markers: Chu et al. (2012) reported two base substitutions in the canine KIT gene that appeared to be associated with susceptibility to malignant melanoma.

Genetic engineering: Unknown
Have human generated variants been created, e.g. through genetic engineering and gene editing
