Mendelian trait/disorder: unknown

Considered a defect: yes

Species-specific name: Inherited thick forelegs

Species-specific description: Affected piglets have a congenital enlargement of the forelegs below the elbow joint, due to abnormal development of bone and connective tissue: the bone is thick, the periostem is rough and there is extensive oedema. The resultant difficulty in standing and moveing about results in death from starvation in the first few days of life.

Inheritance: Claims of single-locus inheritance have been made, but the data are not convincing.

Genetic engineering: Unknown
Have human generated variants been created, e.g. through genetic engineering and gene editing
