History: Williams (1979) was the first to report some (bantam) chickens having eight rather than six tail feathers.
Inheritance: Williams (1979) postulated single-locus autosomal recessive inheritance, but with incomplete penetrance and variable expressivity. This evidence suggests that this trait is actually multifactorial. Somes (1990) lists this as a single-locus trait, with the symbol "ext".
