OMIA:002358-9823 : Resistance/susceptibility to porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) in Sus scrofa (pig)

Categories: Immune system phene

Possibly relevant human trait(s) and/or gene(s) (MIM number): 603209 (trait)

Links to MONDO diseases: No links.

Mendelian trait/disorder: unknown

Considered a defect: yes

Species-specific description: Tu et al. (2019): "Two single-guide RNAs targeting the CMAH gene and Cas9 mRNA were microinjected into the cytoplasm of newly fertilized eggs. Four live founders generated and proven to be biallelic KO, lacking detectable N-glycolylneuraminic acid (NGNA). The founders were bred, and homozygous offspring were obtained. ... piglets were inoculated with ... PEDV ... results suggest that porcine CMAH KO with nullified NGNA expression are not immune to PEDV but that this KO may lessen the severity of the infection and delay its occurrence." This study used genetically modified animals (GMO).

Genetic engineering: Yes - variants have been created artificially, e.g. by genetic engineering or gene editing
Have human generated variants been created, e.g. through genetic engineering and gene editing
