Links to MONDO diseases: No links.

Mendelian trait/disorder: yes

Mode of inheritance: Autosomal

Considered a defect: yes

Key variant known: no

Cross-species summary: Also known as Hairless

Inheritance: There have been many isolated reports of this disorder, and it is impossible to tell whether they are alleleic or not. In the case of Chinese crested dogs, Robinson (1985) provided convincing evidence that hairlessness in this breed is a single-locus trait, and that hairless Chinese crested animals are heterozygous for an allele that is lethal when homozygous: matings among Chinese crested animals produced a ratio of normal to hairless much closer to 2:1 than 3:1.

Genetic engineering: Unknown
Have human generated variants been created, e.g. through genetic engineering and gene editing
