OMIA:002845-9031 : Tail feathers, absent in Gallus gallus (chicken)

Categories: Integument (skin) phene , Limbs / fins / digit / tail phene

Links to MONDO diseases: No links.

Mendelian trait/disorder: yes

Mode of inheritance: Z-linked

Considered a defect: no

Key variant known: no

Species-specific name: Rumplessness, sex linke; taillessness.

Species-specific description: See also 'rumpless' OMIA:001633-9031 : Rumpless in Gallus gallus (chicken)

Inheritance: Wang et al. (2017) report that abnormal tail feather development in Hongshan chickens is a Z-linked dominant trait.

Mapping: Chen et al. (2024): "By joint analysis of genome-wide selection signature analysis and genome-wide association approach, we found that 1 overlapping gene (EDIL3) and 16 peak genes .... located on the Z chromosome [were] associated with the rumpless trait."

Genetic engineering: Unknown
Have human generated variants been created, e.g. through genetic engineering and gene editing

Clinical features: Chen et al. (2024): "Hongshan chickens have 2 kinds of tail feather phenotypes, normal and taillessness. ... rumplessness in Hongshan [is] due to abnormal development of tail feather rather than abnormal development of caudal vertebrae."
