Gene IGF2 : insulin-like growth factor 2 in Sus scrofa

See the equivalent entry at NCBI

In other species: taurine cattle

Symbol: IGF2

Synonyms: IGF-II

Description: insulin-like growth factor 2

Type of gene: protein-coding

Comment: In adjacent papers in the same journal, Nezer et al. (1999) and Jeon et al. (1999) reported that an imprinted QTL for muscle mass, fat deposition and heart size maps to the IGF2 gene. A few years later, Van Laere et al. (2003) identified the quantitative trait nucleotide (QTN) responsible for this QTL, namely "a nucleotide substitution in intron 3 of IGF2 [IGF2-intron3-3072G>A]. The mutation occurs in an evolutionarily conserved CpG island that is hypomethylated in skeletal muscle. The mutation abrogates in vitro interaction with a nuclear factor, probably a repressor, and pigs inheriting the mutation from their sire have a threefold increase in IGF2 messenger RNA expression in postnatal muscle. Our study establishes a causal relationship between a single-base-pair substitution in a non-coding region and a QTL effect." This was the first-ever such discovery (of a non-coding QTN) in any species!
